about
'Chains' opens with the Bulgarian folk song ‘I Mori Majka Jana’, which translates to “Mother Yana [a pagan goddess] is Tired”. It is a homage to the musical heritage that Alien Grace is often inspired by.
Singer Elias O. Graversen originally wrote the lyrics about losing one of his first friends in his new home Berlin. But during the band’s tour in Bulgaria last summer, 'Chains' became a song about striving to live life to the fullest, to not “sit and rust in your chains”. The track was recorded between gigs at Max Sound Studios (John Lawton, Azis), after word of the band reached the studio’s owner, Maxim Goranov (Diana Express), who invited them to record a song with him.
For Alien Grace, it is as if the recording itself carries that glint in the eye of one who is really feeling alive, such as the band might have in the video for the track, compiled of all the footage the band filmed during the tour. Equally tipsy on rakia (Bulgarian drink) and joie de vivre; that’s how to best describe the emotion behind the track. The bittersweetness of letting go.
lyrics
Dear wiser friend, come interpret my dream
Shimmering rivers and cool morning air
Sun crawls up mountains that stretch over me
I think I know what it is to be free
The day I lost my chains I heard you went away
I heard you went away
So here's a song to keep you in good company
Wherever you may be
Dear childless friend, come interpret my dream
This afternoon we are finally free
The day I lost my chains I heard you went away
I heard you went away
So here's a song to keep you in good company
Wherever you may be
(You can sit and rust in your chains, till a dream is all that remains of you
Don't sit and rust in your chains, till a dream is all that remains of you)
The day I lost my chains was strange I must say,
I waited but my tears they never came
I hope now you have someone more than a TV
To keep you company
